Another Kind of Magic – Elizabeth Davies

The final instalment of the Caitlyn trilogy has finally arrived, and I am here to tell you all about it. Before I do though, if you aren’t familiar with this series, you might want to cast an eye over my reviews of Three Bloody Pieces and A Stain On The Soul before you go any further.

BLURB:

“I am a cat. But I am no ordinary cat. I am a witch’s familiar. I am also a woman, with a woman’s heart and a woman’s frailty.”

Nearly two hundred years have passed since Caitlyn was trapped by supernatural forces and black magic, and she has known many mistresses. This time, the witch she is enthralled to is Joan, wife of Llewelyn, Prince of Wales.

At first, this mistress appears no different to any of the others Caitlyn has served – until Llewelyn captures William de Braose, and Joan falls in love, risking everything, including Caitlyn, to fulfil her desire.

Caitlyn, meanwhile, has her own cross to bear in the form of the gallant and reckless Hugh of Pembroke…

REVIEW:

The final book in the Caitlyn trilogy doesn’t disappoint. Many years have passed, and Caitlyn has served many mistresses since we saw her last, and this book took us to a period of history that I knew nothing about. Once more Elizabeth Davies takes the political intrigue and scheming from the history books, and weaves a fascinating tale through the facts, incorporating elaborate plots and magical deeds. Parts of this book that I had assumed were fictional, I was surprised to find out were fact. As with all the books in this trilogy, I loved the little section at the book that separates the fact from the fiction. My inner historian still gets a little thrill from finding out little nuggets of our past that were previously unknown to me.

As so much time has passed since the second book, we are obviously presented with a completely new cast of characters for this book. My particular favourites were precocious Maude and wily Blod – you will soon see why, and I am sure you will love them as I do.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, but I will admit that finishing this book and having to say goodbye to Caitlyn and Cat made me a little sad. Imagine the adventures she would have moving through history! I wonder what she would make of our modern world.

A Stain On The Soul – Elizabeth Davies

I am returning to the Caitlyn trilogy today with the second book in the series by Elizabeth Davies.

BLURB:

Resigned to another lifetime of being a witch’s familiar, Caitlyn has found a degree of peace in her role as the Duke of Normandy’s protector and spy.

But that peace is shattered when she returns to her native land only to come face-to-face with her past, and fall in love with a man who she desperately hopes will become her future.

REVIEW:

A Stain on the Soul picks up the action a fair few years after the end of Three Bloody Pieces, when William, Duke of Normandy is a grown man, and Caitlyn remains bound to his mother, Arlette. The attention to historical detail continues in this second book of the trilogy, and I loved Elizabeth’s twist on the events of the mid 11th century. Reading about Edward and William, and the political intrigue of the time has reignited my interest in this period of history.

There is a darker, more sinister feel to this book, with Arlette feeling less in control of her magic and the darkness within it that Herleva was. There was definitely more of a sense of evil in this book, but I also enjoyed the feeling that Caitlyn was fighting back against the magic a little and trying to claim part of her life back as she finds love.

Despite finding small chinks of happiness in this book, Caitlyn continues to wish for death, either her’s or Arlette’s, to come along and give her back her freedom. Does she get her wish? You’ll just have to read the book because I am not saying another word!

Three Bloody Pieces – Elizabeth Davies

I am thrilled to be taking party today in the birthday blitz for Three Bloody Pieces by Elizabeth Davies. If you haven’t come across this book yet, here’s what it’s all about.

BLURB:

A dead king, a queen who is more than she seems, and a witch who uses the dark arts to entrap her.

Queen, widow, beggar – Lady Caitlyn is all three, and now she can add murderer to the list.

When death and treachery propel her south to Normandy, to seek sanctuary with the exiled Prince Alfred, visions of a woman with ancient eyes travel with her.

Herleva is a woman filled with ambition and greed. A woman who intends to be more than a commoner. A woman who gets what she wants by whatever means possible, even if she has to practice the dark arts to achieve her goals.

A woman who is a witch.

Caitlyn finds herself caught up in a magic which changes her very being. A magic which produces a king to change the lives of every man, woman, and child in England.

REVIEW:

This is a book designed to grab your attention right from the start. The author launches straight into the action without preamble, adding in backstory as she goes. With a basis in fact, and including some names that the historians among you will find familiar, we follow Caitlyn as she flees Wales for Normandy.

As she makes her escape she is haunted by visions and uncovers an intricate web of plotting and betrayal. Not knowing who to trust she finds herself caught up in the blackest of magic.

The author’s research into the practices of witchcraft in the period in which the book is set, shines through in the unsettling detail given to Herleva’s spell casting and scrying. The attention to detail to the social conformities, and the plots to achieve greater powers and territories all add a sense of unease to the story.

I am looking forward to reading and reviewing the rest of the series a little later in the year.
