The final instalment of the Caitlyn trilogy has finally arrived, and I am here to tell you all about it. Before I do though, if you aren’t familiar with this series, you might want to cast an eye over my reviews of Three Bloody Pieces and A Stain On The Soul before you go any further.
BLURB:
“I am a cat. But I am no ordinary cat. I am a witch’s familiar. I am also a woman, with a woman’s heart and a woman’s frailty.”
Nearly two hundred years have passed since Caitlyn was trapped by supernatural forces and black magic, and she has known many mistresses. This time, the witch she is enthralled to is Joan, wife of Llewelyn, Prince of Wales.
At first, this mistress appears no different to any of the others Caitlyn has served – until Llewelyn captures William de Braose, and Joan falls in love, risking everything, including Caitlyn, to fulfil her desire.
Caitlyn, meanwhile, has her own cross to bear in the form of the gallant and reckless Hugh of Pembroke…

REVIEW:
The final book in the Caitlyn trilogy doesn’t disappoint. Many years have passed, and Caitlyn has served many mistresses since we saw her last, and this book took us to a period of history that I knew nothing about. Once more Elizabeth Davies takes the political intrigue and scheming from the history books, and weaves a fascinating tale through the facts, incorporating elaborate plots and magical deeds. Parts of this book that I had assumed were fictional, I was surprised to find out were fact. As with all the books in this trilogy, I loved the little section at the book that separates the fact from the fiction. My inner historian still gets a little thrill from finding out little nuggets of our past that were previously unknown to me.
As so much time has passed since the second book, we are obviously presented with a completely new cast of characters for this book. My particular favourites were precocious Maude and wily Blod – you will soon see why, and I am sure you will love them as I do.
As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, but I will admit that finishing this book and having to say goodbye to Caitlyn and Cat made me a little sad. Imagine the adventures she would have moving through history! I wonder what she would make of our modern world.
